Title: Starting Over
Description: Espella reunites with Carmine in London… Eve is also there.
Spoilers: For PLvsAA
Set: A month after PLvsAA
Warnings: Mentions of the Great Fire and Espella’s catatonic state following that, but not in much detail… Vague descriptions of a car crash (of course) and a broken leg.
Note: For Day 2 of @layton-npc-appreciation-week - I went with V.S Phoenix Wright. Not sure if Eve and Espella count as NPCs, but you don’t get more NPC than a character who appeared for like 2 minutes in the opening cutscene.
Carmine hadn’t seen Espella Cantabella since he’d crashed his car into the Riverside Park, one month ago.
In Carmine’s defence, they had been pursued by witches… or rather, what Carmine had perceived to be witches.
It had been nothing more than an illusion evoked by a mind-altering drug, according to Professor Layton.
The Professor had also revealed that Labyrinthia— the medieval city plagued by magic and witches— did not exist as Carmine remembered it.
All of it had been a facade— a story— constructed to help Espella live with the trauma of a devastating fire from over a decade ago.
The Legendary Fire that had consumed a town and the majority of its inhabitants… except for Espella, Arthur Cantabella, Newton Belduke and his daughter.
A young Espella, convinced she had destroyed the town after being possessed by the ‘Great Witch Bezella’, had entered a catatonic state.
It seemed nothing could break the spell that had fallen over Espella… but then, Arthur Cantabella had written her a story about the banished witches and the triumphant townsfolk. 
More stories had followed, until Labyrinthia came to be.
Carmine had stumbled into Espella’s story by mistake. He had been extremely lost and subsequently, stupefied by the events he’d witnessed in Labyrinthia.
At the best of times, Carmine was strapped for cash… How was a detective meant to survive in a medieval town when he couldn’t tell fact from fiction? The illogical court system had made his head spin!
He had wandered through the streets— penniless and hungry— until he’d bumped into a girl who took pity on him. 
She had brought him to a bakery and given him of a loaf bread for free…
The bakery owner— upon discovering this transgression— had decided Carmine would work at the shop to pay her back, and she would put a roof over his head in the meantime.
And so, Carmine had found himself living alongside Espella Cantabella, Patty Eclaire and Eve the Cat.
What had started as repaying a debt became Patty and Espella patiently teaching him how to bake (and forgiving Carmine’s many mishaps!), listening to the neighbours’ gossip, exploring the Great Archive with Espella, learning the history and the strange customs of Labyrinthia…
Hurrying home with Espella and avoiding the Order of Knights’ hard gaze…
Laughing with Espella and Patty during a flour-fight—
Getting interrupted by the intrusion of five knights, who accused Espella (kind, gentle Espella) of being the Great Witch…
Defending Espella while Patty warded them off with a rolling pin… 
After that, Patty had begged Carmine to take Espella and flee— far away from Labyrinthia. Carmine had agreed.
But he and Espella had been followed, and  knocked off the road.
(Curse his terrible luck and his last name…!)
Carmine had been injured, of course, but Espella could still run. He had urged her to go without him— to find Professor Layton and deliver his letter.
Much to his relief, Espella had obliged; she had left him to traverse a city she didn’t even know the name of.
Carmine didn’t blame Espella. Not for anything at all.
He’d wanted her to be safe and he knew Professor Layton would ensure that.
And the Professor had succeeded! He had solved the puzzle of Labyrinthia! (With some help from his assistants and an American defence attorney…)
Most importantly, he had helped shed light on Espella’s troubled past.
Espella was free now. Free to be herself. Free to process her trauma. Free to leave Labyrinthia, at long last…
She was meant to be visiting Carmine today, at the hospital. 
(He’d recovered from the injuries he had sustained during the car crash, but since then, he had broken his leg while trying to escape out of a window on the ward.)
Carmine glanced at the clock on the wall of his hospital room. Espella had said she would arrive at 3pm… but it was coming up to 4pm now.
He frowned. Where was Espella? Had she simply been delayed during her journey? 
Had the boat ride from Labyrinthia gone smoothly…?
Or had something happened to Espella when she reached London? 
Was she travelling alone? Could she have gotten lost? What if she had been waylaid by some lowlife in a dark alley?
Just as Carmine was envisioning every misfortune that could have befallen poor Espella, he heard two tentative knocks at the door.
“C-come in!” Carmine exclaimed as he leapt out of bed. His left leg, wrapped in a cast, crumpled under him as soon as he tried to stand. “Ahi—!”
He landed on the floor just as the door opened…
Espella was standing in the doorway. 
Her beaming smile faded when she realised Carmine had collapsed.
She let out a cry that sounded both ecstatic and concerned.
Carmine was nearly bowled over again as she caught him in a hug.
Somehow, with her arms locked around his neck, Carmine choked out a laugh. “You made it, then?”
Espella’s grip loosened. She looked at him and nodded. “Made it.”
He smiled. “I’m so glad!”
“There’s someone I want you to meet…”
Espella’s head turned towards the door, where Carmine noticed a figure waiting in the shadows. 
The figure glided into the room and Carmine recognised her.
“You—!” Carmine gasped. He pushed Espella behind him, but he kept glaring at the intruder— the one who had once posed as the ‘Great Witch’. The one who had caused Espella so much grief. “Stay back, you…!”
“Carmine— it’s alright!” Espella protested, gently moving him aside. “This is—“
“Are you— being influenced again, Espella?” Carmine peered at her. (She seemed lucid…)
There was a sigh from across the room. “Espella… Haven’t you explained everything to him?”
“I did, in my letter!” Espella insisted. She pointed from Carmine to the purple-haired woman. “Carmine, this is my friend, Eve—“
“Eve?” Carmine repeated. He glanced around. “Where is Eve?” Aiming another glower at the purple-haired woman, he demanded, “Have you done something to Eve?”
The woman rubbed her forehead with her hand and huffed, “I think you’re confused—“
“Eve the cat is fine and she’s back home,” Espella clarified. “Eve Belduke, my childhood friend, is here.”
Eve— the woman, Newton Belduke’s daughter— gave him a small wave.
“Ah…” Carmine cleared his throat. “I’m sorry— can we start over?”
“I believe I’m the one who owes you an apology,” Eve Belduke said solemnly. 
Espella gave her a reassuring smile. Carmine hummed.
Eve exhaled. “But yes, let’s start over…”

Soul Eater OC Tip #5: Create a distinct head design

When designing a Soul Eater OC, it is a good idea to give the original character a distinct head design. To have a distinct head design means for a character to have a hairstyle, facial features, headwear, or accessories that allow a viewer to easily distinguish them from another character. Making use of these unique features on a Soul Eater character’s head is beneficial in two ways. First, the character will be easily recognizable. Second, the character’s “chibi” soul will be easier to draw.

Creating a distinct head design is a common tip for making an easily recognizable silhouette and thus a good character design. The YouTube channel, BaM Animation, emphasizes the importance of having a unique head silhouette. “Every character design works better if you can recognize them just from the silhouette… Another way to improve silhouette clarity is to take the character’s head and add a little weird shape that is unique to only them.”

Many characters in Soul Eater have head features that make them easily recognizable. Not only do they have weird shapes that accentuate their silhouette, they also have other facial features and hairstyles that do not necessarily add to their silhouette, but make their appearances memorable nevertheless. All these details are effectively utilized in the appearance of their “chibi” soul.

The chibi soul is a representation of a character’s soul visualized by simplifying the character’s head down to its most distinct features. These chibi souls only appear a few times in the series, particularly when Stein is using Soul Perception to analyze the souls of the main characters. Even though the series did not show many chibi versions of its characters’ souls, chibi souls are popular among artists who design Soul Eater OCs. Because chibi souls are such a big part of creating OCs in Soul Eater fandom, it is worth analyzing the designs of canon chibi souls.

Maka’s pigtails are an iconic feature of her head that express the nature of her character very well. While the hairstyle itself can be translated into the stereotypical anime symbol of cuteness, Maka’s pigtails are neat and tidy, rather than flowy and delicate, which appear to reflect her sense of duty and responsibility. The pigtails are also the main feature of her soul, and in some depictions appear to represent the wings of her Grigori soul.

A defining feature of Soul’s face is his sharp teeth, which also happen to be the main feature of his chibi soul. The teeth symbolize the “eater” part of his character, and is also featured in the Soul Eater logo.

Black Star’s silhouette is instantly recognizable because of his star-shaped hair. As a visual representation of his energy and desire to be a star, it is the feature that is prominent in the design of his soul.

Tsubaki’s unique head shape is formed by her long ponytail. Appearing to be an expression of her femininity and practicality, it is the main shape featured in her chibi soul.

Death the Kid’s head is unmistakably his because of his incomplete Lines of Sanzu. While they do not contribute to his silhouette, they are defining part of his appearance, and is the main feature of his chibi soul. What does make his silhouette distinguishable from generic male anime characters with short straight hair, however, is the strands of hair that stick out at the base of his neck.

Liz and Patty’s souls are characterized by their cowboy hats. The two are distinguished from each other with their facial expressions. Patty’s is more cheerful and has a blush, while Liz’s appears to have more droopy eyes.

Not all Soul Eater characters have chibi version souls, but is still significant to point out that Soul Eater character designs have very distinct head details and silhouettes compared to other anime and manga series. To name a few more more examples would be Stein’s head screw, Ragnarok’s X face, Medusa’s hood and Rod of Asclepius hair, Arachne’s spider hair bun, Ox’s glasses and hair spikes, Harvar’s visor and ponytail, Mira’s bandages and dreadlocks, Marie’s eyepatch, Justin’s Zucchetto, and Lord Death’s mask.

It is not mandatory for a Soul Eater OC to have a chibi soul, but understanding the design choices made in the chibi souls of the main characters can help make an OC design that fits the Soul Eater universe better. Not only that, one useful trick could be to design a chibi soul first and adding details later. This will prevent the character design from becoming too generic or overly detail-oriented because it helps the design to start out with a solid and simple base shape.

More stuff from the PLvsPW rewrite inside my head. (Thanks @aceblaze01 for the name idea)
Here we have Phoenix Wright Nicolas and Mia Maya Fey, two completely normal Labrithan Citizens.
I am still learning how to draw ace attorney and Professor Layton characters. I swapped his eye colors cus it looks better.
For Nicolas I did my best to make his outfit remenestant of a modern day suit while staying period acrute. So I went with a vest, I thought there would be no pure white shirts in this time as well so the undershirt is a bit of a dirty white color. The main thing I had to think about was what could replace a tie? The most accurate thing would be a Cravat, but a normal one seems to fit better on someone who would oppose Nicolas, so I gave him one that was tied in a bow instead. Nicolas does his best to make sure his clothes are in good condition to be presented in, that’s why it’s difficult to see the repairs done to his clothes.
Mia was a bit trickier, I wanted her to have a different outfit then Espella, and commoners back in the day didn’t really wear purple. First I thought about giving her a yellow outfit (as it is complementary color) but ultimately I gave her a lavender color with the yellow undershirt. accuracy be dammed. I am happy I managed to make her hairstyle work while still being age appropriate. As well as some hints to her spiritual nature. She is also a bit dirtier than Nicolas due to her having a wild nature.
These two make their living doing odd jobs around Labyrinthia (at one time they were bakers and worked for Patty Eclair) they are a bit lost on what to do with themselves, as they hop from job to job, from goat milker to blacksmith helper, but nothing seems right. Who knows maybe they will find their calling sooner or later.
(Don’t worry they will still wear the aprons in the story!)

So I keep mentioning that I'd like management to set it up so that everything at the gas station that has an UPC scans into the register, and that's not just to reduce cashier error, though that is a big reason.
It is also about inventory management, tracking, and ordering.
Every retail place I've worked so far before this gas station, and my expectation of how the gas station would be run, was set up where everything scanned, scanned items were tracked by the database, and both inventory checks and ordering were streamlined by said database. If I needed to know how many of a certain watch we were supposed to have in stock at the Walmart jewelry counter I could scan one with the little pricing gun thing and see not only a count but where it was stored.
The gas station isn't set up that way.
For some things that are bought frequently but don't have UPCs, like fountain drinks (there is a button for each size of cup or any size cup of ice is $0.50), self-serve coffee, and bagged ice, there are buttons you can hit to automatically both record what was sold (though not specifically, like not which flavor of drink, which kind of coffee, or how many pumps of syrup, etc.) and automatically add the price to the tally.
For beer, chips, sodas, juice, and energy drinks they also scan, though there are deals for energy drinks that have their own buttons. Individually scanned items are tracked, but if you hit the "2 Energy Drink Deal" button, the system puts a price but doesn't know the exact items that sold. Same goes for 2 Red Bull 8oz and 2 Red Bull 12oz. The register knows how much that should be and marks that 2 of that size of Red Bull were bought, but not which flavors. We often run out of some flavors and have an excess of others.
Cigarettes scan, but only branded packs of cigarettes, snuff, chew, and pouches, not bagged loose tobacco or wrapping papers. Cigars, CBD/THC, and Vapes all have a button. You hit the appropriate button, hand-key the price, and that's it. No scanning other than two specific brands of vape, so there's no actual sales tracking in that regard. Except they ALL say "cigarettes" on the receipt.
For everything not mentioned, yet, there are other buttons.
The main buttons are Grocery 1 (items that do not have sales tax) and Grocery 2 (items that do have sales tax, which includes the deli/in-store made sandwiches). If any item that's supposed to scan doesn't, I have to look it up on a printout of an outdated spreadsheet and hand key the price into the correct category. For anything that isn't set up to scan, I have to either find a price sticker on it somewhere or look it up and put it into the correct category just by remembering what goes in which category. The spreadsheet doesn't say.
Ice creams have buttons but sometimes the ice creams look like candy bars, so I'll accidentally ring them up as King Size Candy instead of ice cream. Many ice creams use the same button, like multiple items that aren't Eclair Bar fall under "eclair bar", but the ice cream candy bars are all "candy bar" so there's no tracking which. exactly, are selling.
There's a button for King Size Candy, and one for Regular Candy. I have to know which are which. There are also other candies that don't use those buttons nor do they scan and I might not realize if I don't see the price sticker. I have to hit Grocery 1 and input their price manually. Which specific candies are selling are not tracked via the POS system.
Wine also doesn't get tracked, there's a Wine button.
Things stored in the freezer (frozen meat patties, extra ice cream) are not tracked. We take them out until they're getting low and tell the manager more is needed. There's no indicator for the fact that, for example, there's a whole box of chicken patties in the ice cream case because there wasn't room in the freezer. We just have to hope someone mentions that to us so we know to go look, there.
There are also ice creams in the not-ice-cream freezer which should be in the ice cream case.
As far as I know no one but me knows there is another box of chicken patties in the correct freezer, they're just at the bottom. That is always compeltey frosted over to the point that the frost takes up precious storage space and needs replaced with a stand-up freezer so that products can be spaced out enough to be seen and not have to go digging everything out to get to something at the bottom then tetris it all back in again.
It's a mess and it stresses me the fuck out.
To decide what to order, Manager goes around and writes down things that are low on a piece of paper, but she doesn't check expiration dates so doesn't know to pull things that need pulled and either reordered or not reordered because they didn't sell.
Deli sandwiches are just Grocery 2 499 with no indicator of what, exactly, was sold. Was that a turkey and swiss? A cheeseburger? Pulled chicken? Who knows?! How much of those ingredients is stored? No idea!
She misses things, underorders things, overorders things... There are TOO MANY little bread rolls taking up a huge section where bread is supposed to be in the drinks cooler because that's the only fridge in the store, they will go bad before they get used, and there are not nearly enough burger buns (I am on the last pack and it's Tuesday, more will arrive Friday), there are 5 rows of a specific brand of green tea when there should be one row of that brand of green tea and the other rows should be other flavors but she ordered too much green and not enough of the other flavors. There are no more small bottles of milk because they keep running out and she doesn't order enough.
At the same time, often vendors decide what we will order and that's just fucking chaos. Due to the way the cooler is stocked, for example, often vendors will not see their product is full because it's not where it's expected to be, because it was put there to fill a hole left by another product, and then will order, say, more Green Tea thinking "Wow they went through that fast, they must need more" when it's just here and there.
So yeah, I really, realllllyyy wish she'd make everything scan. It would take maybe two to three days of staying focused on that task and not having to hop on the register to get it done, which isn't much.

I can understand her not wanting to do it. She's always busy (partly because of bad inventory management and lack of storage so she has to deal with vendors all the time) and it IS a daunting, tedious task that is never ending because new stuff comes in all the time and would have to be added to the database, but that's much easier to do bit by bit once the bulk of the information has been established.
Just like when I was trying to establish the naming convention for my pony work photos. Now that I have it figured out, keeping it going is very easy.

Carmine Accidenti character headcanons:
He was actually born in Switzerland, but his family are Italian. (Based off Carmine’s VA!) 
Carmine grew up in Monza— a city in northern Italy, best known for its Grand Prix motor racing circuit.
The number of times he crashed his parents’ cars…
Carmine can speak several European languages, including Italian, French, Spanish, German and English. People find it hard to place his accent.
Carmine came to England to attend university and accidentally ended up studying archaeology
Professor Layton is Carmine’s favourite tutor. At first, Layton finds Carmine familiar for reasons he can’t explain (Carmine resembles a young Leon Bronev), and Layton finds this unnerving, but soon Layton appreciates Carmine’s determination and his shared love of puzzles. 
Carmine gets a red mini that greatly resembles the Laytonmobile
For how often he creates chaos and mess at Gressenheller, Carmine is the bane of Rosa Grimes’ existence.
As much as Carmine grows to like archeology, he struggles with writing his essays in English. Janice offers to proofread his work, in exchange for Italian lessons from Carmine.
He and Janice become good friends (Carmine may or may not have had a crush on her but he stops when he realises Janice has feelings for Melina). The pair remain in touch long after they have left Gressenheller.
Carmine wants to follow in Layton’s footsteps— not as an archaeologist but as a detective with a tendency to go on wild and dangerous adventures 
When he returns from Labyrinthia, Janice visits Carmine in hospital. The two of them bond over the shared experience of having their memories altered.
Janice worries about Carmine— he reminds her of Melina for how headstrong he is, but Janice knows Carmine is more indestructible than Melina.
While he’s in Labyrinthia, Carmine becomes attached to Espella and sees her as a younger sister. 
At Espella’s request, Patty Eclaire lets Carmine work and reside at the bakery. 
He  sets to bakery on fire several times, much to Espella’s horror. After one such incident, he comforts Espella when she’s frozen with fear, as if she was in a trance.
While in Labyrinthia, Carmine gradually remembers he’s a detective as he helps the townspeople solve mundane mysteries.
This brings him to the attention of the Order of Knights, who almost arrest him on several occasions for his association with Espella. 
He develops a rivalry/romance with Zacharias Barnham. Both find each other so illogical
One night, a group of rogue knights burst into the bakery to question Espella. Carmine helps to defend Espella while Aunt Patty ward the knights off with a rolling pin.
Eventually, Carmine realises Espella is the key to solving the mystery of Labyrinthia. He convinces Espella to escape from the town with him, so they can get help.
